Canva’s website builder is great until you want something interactive. There is no code block, pasting HTML does nothing, and there is no built-in countdown timer. So if you are trying to put a real, ticking countdown on a Canva site, for a sale, a launch, or an event, you hit a wall.

The fix is an embed. Canva will not run custom code, but its Embed element does accept a link. So you host the countdown somewhere else and hand Canva the link. This guide uses Fugte to build and host the timer for free. Here is the whole thing in about two minutes.

Step 1: Create the countdown

Head to Fugte and open the Starters menu, then pick the Countdown Timer and click Use. If you would rather not start from a template, you can describe the timer in a sentence and let the AI build it. Either way you have a working countdown on screen in a few seconds.

Step 2: Customize it

The date, the text, and the colors are simple form fields, not code. Set your end date and time, then match the colors to your brand.

One tip that matters for Canva: leave the widget background transparent. That way, whatever background you design in Canva shows right through the timer, so it looks like part of your page instead of a box sitting on top of it.

When it looks right, switch to the Preview tab, click the link button, and copy the hosted URL.

Step 3: Embed it in your Canva website

Back in Canva, open your website design and go to Apps in the left bar. Search for Embed, and open the Embed app (it is free, no Canva subscription needed). Paste your hosted URL, and Canva loads the live timer right onto the page. Drag to resize it, place it where you want, and hit Publish.

That is it: a real, ticking countdown on a Canva website.

The part that keeps paying off

Here is why the embed approach beats a static graphic. The next time your date changes, you do not rebuild anything and you do not even open Canva. You change the end date in Fugte, save, and your live site updates on its own. One edit, every place the widget is embedded. (Canva caches pages, so give it a minute or two to show the change online.)

Good to know

• It is an iframe. The countdown lives in a sandboxed frame, isolated from your page, so it cannot slow down or break the rest of your Canva site.
• Free plan works for this. A countdown is display-only, so the free plan covers it. Free widgets carry a small Fugte badge; removing it is on a paid plan.
• Other platforms too. The same hosted link works in Shopify, WordPress, Webflow, and Notion, not just Canva.
